Company History
Barbours Opticians was originally formed by Arthur Edmund Barbour (AEB) in 1930. AEB practiced optometry into his 84th year. In this time he was in general practice and hospital eye services (mainly specialist contact lens work). AEB also taught optometry. Arthur also had other degrees in physics and astronomy. Arthurs sister Mrs. Beatrice Lynn was an Ophthalmologist working in the Belfast area. Both are now sadly deceased.
Samuel (Hamish) Barbour is the current owner. Samuel has worked tirelessly for the optical profession in the provence for many years, having held many posts:- northern ireland optical society president - twice, NI representative on the Association of Optometrists and Chairman of the NI negotiating committee. Samuel is currently practising full time in all the different branches.
Paul Hamish Barbour is the third generation to enter the firm having qualified in Optometry at UMIST Manchester in 1996. Paul has a keen interest in sports vision, having Captained Academy Rugby club and been a National champion Javelin thrower and sailor.
Mrs. Geralyn Dohery also trained with us, in Belfast. Geralyn is a second generation optometrist also, and is one of only a few optometrists in Ulster to hold higher specialist contact lens qualifications. Geralyn currently works in our Belfast city centre practice.
